Hemodialysis (HD) patients are considered to have a higher risk of developing hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Therefore, blood collection for the detection of the HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies in HD patients is indicated at least every 6 months. However, in most of the current studies, the first blood sample for HBV screening is collected after a long period of time. In the present study, the impact of the time elapsed between blood collection and the transfer to the laboratory on the level of pre-analytical variables was investigated. Four hundred and fifty-eight blood samples were collected from 69 HD patients, split into two aliquots and distributed into two tubes. The first tube was centrifuged and was then divided into three parts; the serum was frozen at -20 degrees C until the time of testing and the aliquots of red blood cells (RBCs) were stored at 4 degrees C. Another part of RBCs was divided into three aliquots, one of which was mixed with 0.5 M EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and was stored at 4 degrees C, another was mixed with neither EDTA nor BTT (buffer containing trisodium citrate) and was stored at 4 degrees C, and the third was centrifuged and frozen at -20 degrees C until testing. All samples were screened for HBsAg and HCV antibodies using the Abbott Architect assay. In 91.2% of the samples, HBsAg and/or HCV antibodies were detected. The percentage of specimens that could be tested for all the criteria were 79.1%, 89.7% and 71.7% in the EDTA, BTT and EDTA/BTT samples, respectively. For the RBC samples, no statistically significant differences were observed between the criteria (p>0.05). The laboratory performance for HB
