Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Epi: The Best Moments and Characters of the Series

The battleship Yamato is making its way to the outermost fringes of the solar system when a transmission is received from Project Chief Heikuro Todo on Earth. Todo, accompanied by General Kotetsu Serizawa, extends his gratitude to Admiral Juzo Okita and the crew for wiping out the Garmillas base on Pluto and giving their ravaged world relief from ongoing planet bomb attacks. Before Todo can continue, the hyperspace signal is cut off by interference from the heliopause that separates the solar system from the rest of the galaxy.

With Space Battleship Yamato 2199, director Yutaka Izubuchi (RahXephon) is remaking the classic space opera anime Space Battleship Yamato. The project debuted in Japan last April as a series of theatrical films, but it was planned from the beginning as a television series as well. The first episode aired on television in April, and the final film will open in Japanese theaters on August 24.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Epi

With all of Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 now available on both Crunchyroll and Funimation, Draggle and I decided to record a special, 40-minute episode with guest Vucub of anime blog The Untold Story of Altair & Vega. Please join us in our discussion about this fantastic space opera!

In 2199, the surface of the Earth has been bombarded into an uninhabitable radioactive wasteland by an alien race from the planet Gamilas. The Gamilan fleet (Gamilon in the Star Blazers dub) is superior to humanity's few remaining warships, and the extinction of humanity is likely within a year. In the middle of a losing battle against the Gamilon fleet, a spaceship from the planet Iscandar arrives and crashes on Mars. Two space cadets investigate the wreck, and discover a beautiful woman, dead, with a message for Earth: if Earth can send a ship to Iscandar, Queen Starsha of Iscandar will give Earth technology that will neutralize the radioactive contamination on the planet, and save humanity.

In response, humanity refits the wreck of the World War II battleship Yamato, lying at rest on the exposed surface where the ocean used to be, into a space battleship, using plans for a star drive included in Starsha's message. The Yamato then sets forth on a desperate quest to reach Iscandar and save humanity.

One of my favourite aspects of Yamato 2199 is the detail put into its battle sequences, and its depiction of space warfare as if it were taking place on water. This episode is perhaps the best example of this, as we are treated to a battle that is reminiscent of those found in classic WWII films, complete with fighter planes, bombers, and torpedo planes, all trying to take down the Yamato. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 has always done an excellent job of detailing some of the minutia of everyday life aboard a battleship. Many episodes have scenes showing apparently incidental little actions that ultimately help to create a a thoughtful, and fully realised representation of the characters and their lives in space. Furthermore, it is a series that revels in the stark beauty of the universe, coupled with its absolute loneliness. Read more of this post 2ff7e9595c
